Organic Gardening

An organic garden need not be large.  For the first time gardener, start with a small plot of land.  Working in the soil may be done in 2 ways.  The Traditional Method, getting a compost bin or making a compost pile which can be mixed in with garden soil after 8 weeks.

The Heo Method.  A garden can be worked by digging holes and depositing compost and burying it around the garden.  Start at one end and move around the garden at the end of each week.  Sew your first seeds.  Bury compost in the middle of the garden.  Introduce seedlings to the sun increasing by one hour every day, until your seedlings are getting 6 to 8 hours of sun.  By the time you have completed working the burying system at the middle of the garden, the first hole has decomposed and can be stirred and turned over.  This small section is ready for planting.  Transplant the first seedlings to the first hole.  You will be sewing seeds every week.  At any time, you will be sewing seeds, introducing seedlings to the sun, burying compost or transplanting seeds.  After about 8 weeks, you will have seeded 8 different species and after 10 weeks you will have a full garden of your favorite produce.

The Garden below was planted using the Heo Method.  The oldest plants are the collards, bell peppers and cayenne pepppers from last year.  The compost was buried around these as the soil was worked.  The oregano was planted in a chia sponge which was buried in the garden but did very well.  The basil, the cilantro, lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers were transplanted from seeds sewn in the kitchen.

Finally, misting your organic garden with a hose will ensure that you do not damage the small branches or blossoms.  Harvest your herbs by cutting from the plants and pick your peppers and tomatoes.
